Paper Airplane Manufacturing: Lessons Learned
Recently the Southern Indiana Network for the Advancement of Manufacturing (SI-NAM) met at the Vincennes University Jasper Campus for a Lean Manufacturing Simulation.
David Zeese, an advanced manufacturing specialist from the Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership Team, was on hand to lead the simulation.
The 50 plus attendees were divided in 5 teams. The teams were given basic parameters on manufacturing paper airplanes. Initial production measurements were not encouraging. Mr. Zeese gave an overview of Lean manufacturing techniques and the participants made suggestions to improve production. The second round of production showed significant improvement.
The exercise proved to be a very powerful example of what Lean Manufacturing can do help companies be more competitive. President’s Perspective
