Ribbon Cut on new US-231 Bridge

Officials from INDOT, Dubois and Martin Counties cut the ribbon on the US 231 bridge over the White River-East Fork Thursday, November 1.  The bridge marks the most recent development on the highway project that will bypass US-231 around Jasper’s east side.  DCADC Board members John Burger, Mayor Gail Kemp, and Mayor Bill Schmitt participated in the ceremony.

President’s Perspective

The ribbon cutting for the new US 231 bridge is a noteworthy event as it reiterates the interest and importance of the US 231 By-Pass.  While INDOT continues to complete the requirements of the Environmental Impact Statement, Dubois County continues to watch and wait on final design and connection plans.  In the very near future, the waiting will be over and it will be incumbent on Dubois County to carefully consider the local transportation and development concerns associated with the $200 million dollar By-Pass Project.

Many communities have found considerable value in developing corridor plans in advance of new construction as a tool to help guide new development and enhance transportation mobility along new highways.  Dubois County will likely find value in such a planning effort.

We’ve all seen stretches of new highway construction that have become bottlenecks and other projects that have added real economic and transportation value.  With good planning and involvement, we can ensure the 231 By Pass Project meets our expectations.
