Pizza and Perspectives

This week the DCADC staff hosted a pizza party for Dubois County students attending the University of Southern Indiana.

WelcomeThe event was a pilot effort of the DCADC to engage Dubois County youth who are pursing higher education at USI.   The initial intent of the meeting was to address brain drain issues by making students aware that Dubois County values their pursuit of higher education and wants them to consider career opportunities in Dubois County (at sometime in their life).

In the course of the group enjoying pizza, the 50 plus USI students became very engaged and quick to join in a facilitated discussion, lead by Sue Ellspermann, Ferdinand native and USI faculty member.  The group shared perspectives and opinions on why they may or may not consider returning to Dubois County to pursue their career interest.

A special thanks to Phil Parker, Director of Career Services and Placement at USI, for helping bring this wonderful discussion together.

In light of the success of this engagement, DCADC intends to visit students at other higher learning institutions.

President's Perspective

Bob

We have talked a great deal amongst ourselves about the "brain drain" concerns and what to do about it.  It was enlightening to hear first hand from Dubois County students about their opinions, concerns and changes they would like to see in our community.

It also become clear to me that we need to be resolute about asking young people to be more involved in our community/economic development efforts.

It is their future we are working on today; we should include them in the conversation.  They bring remarkable value to the table.
